Irena Ossola bike racing recovery pH Adjust alkalinizing formulaEditor’s note: HPDI’s sponsored pro cyclist Irena Ossola is a frequent contributor to our blog. Today she writes about her experience with adjusting and monitoring her pH levels using pH Adjust and pH test strips. ~

I have used HPDI’s pH Adjust alkalinizing formula for about two months, and my experience has been quite interesting. I can see how my body reacts on a chemical level to different stresses—such as racing, travel, training, rest, and different foods I eat. I consistently use pH paper to test my pH first thing when I wake up in order to have a more controlled test.

My primary finding is that after a race my body is quite acidic (pH of 6.3). While in contrast after a day of rest and/or dinner consisting of lots of vegetables and spinach my body is quite alkaline (pH of 7.5 to 8).

While in France and racing very hard, I noticed that taking pH Adjust every morning helped my body feel more balanced and avoid spikes of energy or tiredness. I could rest and sleep more deeply, and train with both greater quality and frequency.

After a month in France of hard racing and training, I began experiencing leg cramping due to the fatigue and travel. I remained consistent in my testing and taking pH Adjust through this difficult period. Initially, my tests were very acidic when the cramps began. Then as my diet consisted of just soup and salad (to hydrate and ease the burden on my digestion/kidneys) the pH test strips showed my pH to be more alkaline.

Also, I read that bicarbonate could help with cramping as it acts as a buffer in the body. So I continued to take the pH Adjust consistently and even increased my doses by adding an evening dose as well, if my afternoon/evening pH test showed my body was acidic (below pH 7).

During the period of cramping I know pH Adjust helped to reestablish an alkaline environment in my body. This is important in order to heal from the cramping which creates a lot of lactic acid and fatigue in my muscles. I noticed the symptoms were reduced. During the cramping stage, I usually have cramping even when walking, but this time it was limited primarily to the bike. I recovered faster and felt better sooner, which I think is a result of the pH Adjust and the correct diet.

test pH paper

Testing pH levels with litmus paper guides my diet and use of pH Adjust.

Even after travel and during my return to harder training I will continue to take pH Adjust as part of my normal routine. There is nothing else available or on the market that acts so specifically to balance the pH within the body. This is so important as we introduce and put many stresses on our body that take it out of balance. Whether it is environmental or nutritional, these stresses can lead to further problems. So simply taking pH Adjust every morning can help protect against these variables. I feel the difference when I am consistent in taking it, and my body is under constant stresses due to my work as a professional cyclist.

pH Adjust

pH Adjust helps me maintain optimal pH levels—there’s nothing else like it.

Last month I returned from Europe where I was suffering from some leg cramping, so I decided to do a body cleanup. I was still taking pH Adjust in the morning and my normal supplements, but I also wanted to do a 3–5 day juice cleanse. This helped the recovery as it cleans out my kidneys and gives my digestion a rest. Whenever I return from travel or racing I try to do a juice cleanse to reboot my system.

Me and my bike!

The three day juice cleanse ended up being a great flush, and my legs were recovering very well after all the travel, racing, cramping, and stress.

I did notice some feelings of fogginess in my head during the cleanse. But I was told that this is not uncommon to feel as it could be either from the reduced amount of protein entering the body, or because the toxins are being cleaned out of the system, so the mind is also readjusting to this as well.

I have noticed that the more juice cleanses I do, the faster and easier my body adjusts to the fluid diet. I don’t feel hunger, but just craving for the juice and energy. As long as I have enough juice made and on hand, I don’t feel worried about my ability to nourish my body. Without intense training I really enjoy the cleanse and don’t feel the need or cravings for sugar or certain foods. It simplifies life, and allows me to focus on important things like training and my work as a pro cyclist.

Pro Tip: When going through lots of stress on the body like exercise, illness, surgery, polluted environments, etc., increase the amount of Rejuvenate! superfoods in your diet and eat sardines. Both of these nutritional components will help speed up recovery time, and battle any incoming hazards and risk factors to your body.

Fred Liers PhD shingles herpes chickenpoxIf you’ve ever experienced shingles, or witnessed someone close to you experience it, then you probably know it’s a condition to avoid if at all possible. I experienced it, as have several persons I know.

Essentially, shingles is a commonly occurring viral condition caused by a reactivation of varicella zoster virus (Chickenpox). It is characterized by the development of a rash usually either on the right or left side of the body, and sometimes the face. In severe cases, vision loss may occur. One person I know lost hearing in one ear.

The rash is typically accompanied by varying levels of nerve pain and tingling sensations. The rash may disappear within one month. Yet, in some cases there may be ongoing nerve pain that can last for months or years. Shingles may reoccur. I know of several persons who have had it more than once. Others say they can feel it ‘coming on’ and take immediate steps to stop a recurrence.

I experienced what might be considered a ‘mild’ case of shingles. Still, it was probably three weeks before my symptoms mostly abated, and four or five weeks before I was felt completely normal.

First, there was a week of increased sensitivity of my skin to touch in around the affected areas, as well as tingling sensations, and pain radiating from my lower back down the back and inside of my left leg. I also experienced mild fever, malaise, and low energy. All this before any rash appeared and prior to my awareness that my symptoms were caused by shingles.

Acupuncture can be helpful for shingles pain.

Acupuncture can be helpful for shingles pain.

Then the rash started at my sacrum and ran in patches down the inside of my left leg to my ankle. The nerve pain made it increasingly difficult to walk comfortably, and I experienced major fatigue. I continued to feel intense tingling, shooting nerve pain, and sensitive skin for several weeks.

When I say I had a relatively mild case of shingles, I don’t mean to diminish my experience of pain or fatigue. But I know other people whose pain definitively was greater than mine, and whose symptoms lasted longer. In some cases, they didn’t know what condition they were dealing with for days or weeks.

Fortunately, I acted immediately after I knew I had shingles. In dealing with shingles it is important that the individual rest and take measures to strengthen and support the immune system.

I would say that the most important actions I took were to boost nutrient intake (including higher intake of vitamin C), and take the amino acid l-lysine, olive leaf extract, Immune-Assist™ mushroom extract, and Prescript-Assist probiotic & prebiotic formula (soil-based organisms).

Please refer to the recommendations in the table (below), which was developed by my father, Hank Liers, PhD, several years ago. He refines the recommedations on an ongoing basis. Indeed, he was instrumental in supporting my recovery during the time I had shingles.

Also helpful were essential oils (lavender, lemon balm, helichrysum) rubbed directly onto the rash 2–3 times daily, as well as baths using magnesium chloride (oil or flakes). I also sprayed Polyvalent Silver, Warrior Mist, and Warrior Sleep on the rash.

Warrior Mist is formulated to stop pain. Warrior Sleep contains lavender. I often applied the Warrior Sleep at night. When I applied it during the day it did not overly relax me probably because I only applied small amounts to my leg. When seeking to induce sleep or relaxation, I usually apply larger amounts of it to my neck and face.

Regarding essential oils, be sure to follow the recommendations on the bottle. If necessary, you can dilute oils using a carrier oil (like almond or coconut oil) if your skin is particularly sensitive.

essential oils lavender shingles

Essentials oils such as lavender can be helpful for shingles.

I rested a few more hours daily for a couple weeks, and longer during peak periods of fatigue. However, I took short walks or engaged in gentle exercise whenever possible. I exposed the rash to sunshine for 10–15 minutes every day.

I had two acupuncture treatments, which significantly reduced pain. After each treatment, I noticed it was easier to walk normally. During the first treatment I felt shooting, needle-like sensations run the length of my left leg. These sensations were more intense in the areas most greatly affected. Thereafter pain and tingling was less noticeable. This reduction hastened my return to normal activity.

Several weeks after onset of the rash, I performed a juice cleanse (liver flush), which lasted nine days. I felt noticeably greater energy during and after the cleanse. I believe it powerfully supported my body’s healing process.

During the time on my juice flush, I consumed only fresh vegetable juices, and herbal teas and tinctures. The fresh, organic juice rejuvenated me, and it gave my body a break from having to digest solid food. Thus, I gained significant nutritional benefits while simultaneously cleansing and conserving energy normally required for digestion and related metabolic processes.

It probably helped I was already eating a healthy diet and that I routinely take all the foundational supplements (multivitamins, essential fats, vitamin C, Rejuvenate! superfoods) listed in the table below.

I feel that Rejuvenate! superfoods were particularly instrumental in my recovery. Whereas I regularly take 1–4 scoops of Rejuvenate! superfoods daily, I increased my dose closer to 5–8 scoops daily. I emphasized Rejuvenate! Original, yet also took higher amounts of Rejuvenate! PLUS and Rejuvenate! Berries & Herbs.

I consume a healthy diet that is mostly organic, relatively high in greens and vegetables, and low in simple carbohydrates. I eat lean proteins (fish like wild-caught salmon), complex carbohydrates (like broccoli), and a few whole grains (organic brown rice).

Notably during my time with shingles, I reduced my intake of foods high in arginine. I also increased my intake of foods high in lysine. A balance of  these two amino acids in favor of lysine is known to lessen the activity of the virus.

It may be that my case of shingles was relatively less severe due to the fact that my nutrition is fairly solid. For had my nutritional status and/or my immune system been compromised, I believe my ability to fight the virus would have been correspondingly lessened.

What follows below is the Table (1.0) and additional information comprising the shingles recommendations, as developed by Hank Liers, PhD.

No Deaths from ANY Dietary Supplement

Zero Fatalities from Minerals, Vitamins, Amino Acids, Herbs, Homeopathic Remedies

by Andrew W. Saul, Editor

(OMNS Jan 16, 2015) There was not even one death caused by any dietary supplement in 2013, according to the most recent information collected by the US National Poison Data System. The new 251-page annual report of the American Association of Poison Control Centers, published in the journal Clinical Toxicology (1), shows no deaths whatsoever from any dietary supplement.

Additionally, there were zero deaths from any amino acid or herbal product. This means no deaths at all from blue cohosh, echinacea, ginkgo biloba, ginseng, kava kava, St. John’s wort, valerian, yohimbe, Asian medicines, ayurvedic medicines, or any other botanical. There were zero deaths from creatine, blue-green algae, glucosamine, chondroitin, melatonin, or any homeopathic remedy.

Furthermore, there were zero deaths from any dietary mineral supplement. This means there were no fatalities from calcium, magnesium, chromium, zinc, colloidal silver, selenium, iron, or multimineral supplements. Reported in the “Electrolyte and Mineral” category were two fatalities from the medical use of “Sodium and sodium salts.” These are not dietary supplements.

The US National Poison Data System is “the only comprehensive, near real-time, poisoning surveillance database in the United States. In 2013, poison professionals at the nation’s 55 poison centers managed about 2.2 million human poison exposures, with children younger than 6 accounting for about half of all poison exposure cases.”

No man, woman or child died from any nutritional supplement. Period.

If nutritional supplements are allegedly so “dangerous,” as the FDA, the news media, and even some physicians still claim, then where are the bodies?

Dr. Hank Liers, PhD virus nutritional approaches

Fred Liers PhD virus nutritional approaches

“Flu season” is here. It’s hard to escape it—as evidenced by sick friends and coworkers—and maybe yourself or family members. Not to mention exhortations to get flu shots in the media and elsewhere.

Flu indeed dominates health news during the winter. This year it coincides with massive media coverage on the Ebola virus.

Are flu shots worth taking to protect against viral illness? The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) admits the flu shot may not be effective this year.

In fact, the flu vaccine may offer offer little protection. There are simply too many influenza strains to cover. This year’s vaccine was in production when CDC realized the vaccine does not include the most virulent strain of the season.

What about protection against other viruses? There are thousands. Yet, there are many things you can do to ensure your body can defend itself.

From a perspective of natural healing, the best—and perhaps only—thing to do to combat viruses is establish good health and strong immunity, and then maintain them.

More specifically, natural nutritional approaches supporting the body against viruses include:

1) Establish solid foundational nutrition and optimal nutrients intake though diet and nutritional supplements

2) Build immunity by natural means, including specific immune-enhancing formulas.

3) Take appropriate natural antimicrobial (e.g., antiviral) supplements, including certain herbs, minerals, amino acids, and other nutrients.

The list of approaches is not comprehensive. There exist other natural means supporting the body against viruses that are not specifically nutritional. For example, infrared saunas, hydrotherapy, and various forms of exercise support strong immunity and optimal health in the body. Many approaches are discussed in the HPDI Rejuvenation Program (see below) other than nutrition.

The Rejuvenation Program addresses various health-building practices, including preventing toxicity and detoxification (including related products like Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula and Hepa Plus) that can powerfully support good health. However, this article primarily focuses on nutritional approaches supporting the body defending itself against viruses.

Establishing and maintaining good nutrition is perhaps the highest priority item when seeking to build optimal health. The kind of health necessary to keep the body and its immune system strong when exposed to viruses.

Winter Health Tea viruses flu colds

Hot herbal tea blends with cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, and lemon are helpful for winter flu and coughs.

HPDI offers ideas and suggestions for establishing and maintaining good health and strong immunity that can help you fight viruses.

Many of the ideas and programs are found in detail in the HPDI Rejuvenation Program. (You will hear a lot about that in this article.)

First and foremost, we believe health begins with diet and nutrition, including Foundational Supplements. This is the first part of the Rejuvenation Program.

This article will not address diet in detail. However, the HPDI Rejuvenation Program generally emphasizes a balanced, varied diet, consisting of whole, high-density foods, including many vegetables and other plant foods. It favors organically grown and pesticide- and chemical-free foods. A certain level of raw foods is desirable.

The Rejuvenation Program is not prescriptive about what any given individual should eat. Individuals have different dietary needs depending on many factors, including age, level of exercise, blood type, metabolic type, food sensitivities, etc.

Certainly it is best to avoid consuming processed foods, refined foods, as well as high-sugar and other nutritionally depleted foods. In addition, the foods produced by industrial agriculture (i.e., foods containing synthetic pesticides, herbicides, and genetically modified (GMO) foods are best avoided. In addition, ingredients like artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, as well as deleterious additives, fillers, excipients and other non-nutrients or anti-nutrients.

Important dietary recommendations in the Rejuvenation Program include consuming fresh vegetable juices and smoothies, high-density foods (like chia seeds), and relatively high levels of dietary nucleic acids (like those found in Rejuvenate! superfoods).

In summary, the HPDI Rejuvenation Program recommends:

– A Balanced Diet

– Organic and Wild-Crafted, Nutrient-Dense Whole Foods

– Fresh Juices & Smoothies made with Organic Vegetables, Fruits, and Herbs

– Dietary Nucleic Acids (RNA, DNA) from natural sources like chlorella

– Superfoods, especially Rejuvenate!™ superfoods (high-RNA formulas)

– Sufficient Dietary Fiber (also see Intestinal Rejuvenation Formula)

– Alkaline-Forming Diet (high in plant-based foods)

– Eating Right For Your Blood Type (O, A, B, or AB)

– Appropriate routines for individuals, including exercise, yoga, massage therapy, acupuncture, hydrotherapy, as well as relaxation/meditation/biofeedback.

What distinguishes HPDI’s Rejuvenation Program from other health and wellness programs,  supplement systems, diets, or detoxification protocols is its emphasis on a complete system of nutritional supplements and a comprehensive approach to supporting optimal health and well-being.

Many people take a daily multivitamin or essential fats, for example. Yet, the fact remains most people do not obtain all the nutrition they require either from foods or from supplements. One reason is that many people do not know which supplements or group of supplements they should take that constitutes a complete nutritional supplement program. Or they may not know the deficiencies from which they suffer.

The majority of people are deficient in magnesium, iodine, vitamin D, Vitamin E, B vitamins, nucleic acids, and other critical nutrients. Only a minority of individuals realize they are deficient, and even fewer take advantage of the availability of supplements to correct deficiencies, including those related to diet and nutrition.

HPDI system of Foundational Supplements rests on four pillars: 1) Multivitamins, 2) Antioxidant/Vitamin C formulas, 3) Essential Fatty Acid (EFA) formulas, and 4) Rejuvenate!™ superfoods (providing therapeutic levels of dietary nucleic acids, which Dr. Benjamin S. Frank asserts are nutrients essential for health).

HPDI offers multiple products in each category, all designed to provide high levels of essential nutrients. Among multivitamins, HPDI offers the Mighty Multi-Vite™ as a premier formula, but also offers products like Multi Two Tabs (which more economically provide similar levels of nutrients).

Likewise, HPDI offers Ultimate Protector and PRO-C™ as our premium antioxidant & Vitamin C formulas. Yet, we also offer Buffered-C (tablets) and Vitamin C (ascorbic acid) capsules that offer economy and potency.

foundational supplements viruses

HPDI Foundational Supplements are multivitamins, antioxidants/Vitamin C, essential fats, and Rejuvenate! superfoods.

Dietary nucleic acids are considered by many to be essential nutrients for health. HPDI currently offers three versions: Rejuvenate! PLUS, Rejuvenate! Berries & Herbs, and Rejuvenate! (original greens). Rejuvenate! superfoods are discussed in greater detail in Part Three and Part Four of the HPDI Rejuvenation Program. (Note: Rejuvenate! PRO and Rejuvenate! Strawberry–Peach Protein Plus are not currently available.)

The Greens Continuum Rejuvenate superfoods chlorella RNA viruses

Rejuvenate! superfoods vary in taste and ingredients, but all offer high levels of dietary nucleic acids.

These four types of foundational supplements provide a base for good health by giving the body the nutrients both required for establishing basic health and for supporting optimal health beyond a good diet. That is, they help ensure complete nutrient intake regardless of the type of diet a person consumes.

It is known that established government standards for nutrient intake are minimal at best (i.e., not optimal for human health). In addition, the principle of biochemical individuality shows that different persons require somewhat different levels of various nutrients. HPDI formulas are designed to offer maximal levels of essential nutrients safely and effectively. The intention behind the formulation of HPDI Foundational Supplements is supporting the optimal health of the invididual.

When individuals consumes the four basic foundational supplements, they gain a greater chance of meeting their unique nutritional needs. They also thereby provide the nutrients their body requires not only to sustain itself and create health, but also to defend itself by supporting optimal cell defense and immunity.

Learn more about the HPDI system of Foundational Supplements (

Building powerful immunity depends substantially on how well the body is nourished. That is, how completely the body receives the nutrition required to support its general good health and enable it to defend itself . But that is not all.

When it comes to defending the body against viruses, two specific types of formulas can play important roles beyond diet and foundational supplements. These are 1) immunity building formulas that include specific substances/nutrients known to support a robust immune system and 2) Formulas that include nutrients/herbs/substances acting as antivirals and antimicrobials in the body.

Many specific immune-building formulas/nutrients, as well as formulas acting as antivirals are included among HPDI’s Enhancement Formulas. These formulas include Immune-Assist™ (medicinal mushrooms), olive leaf extract, Cordyceps, Vitamin D3 Plus, Nascent Iodine, Selenium, Zinc, silver (SilverBiotics Polyvalent silver), and magnesium formulas. Some of these formulas are described in detail in Part Five of the HPDI Rejuvenation Program, as well as below.

Other immune-building foods/herbs and antiviral substances like echinacea and garlic are also part of the Rejuvenation Program. For example, echinacea is considered in Part Five, and garlic is discussed in Part Six as its own supporting protocol. Other supporting protocols include hydrotherapy and sauna therapy. Thus, most of HPDI’s immune-building and antiviral type formulas fall into either the category of Enhancement Formulas or Supporting Protocols. In a few cases, certain supplement formulas or recommended foods/herbs both build immunity and act directly as antivirals (e.g., garlic).

Note: there are other important nutrients like glutathione, quercetin, and certain liposomal forms of nutrients (e.g., vitamin C) that we won’t go cover in this article, but that can be useful for immunity against viruses. While this article is not intended to be comprehensive, our goal nevertheless is to provide resources that can help anyone seeking optimal health.

As mentioned, immune-building formulas in the HPDI system usually fall into the category of Enhancement Formulas. Enhancement Formulas are the “next-level” of defense built upon the Foundational Supplements.

That is, after individuals have established high nutrient intake using foundational supplements, we typically recommend Enhancement Formulas next because of their unique capacities to support and build health.

While not all Enhancement Formulas specifically build immunity, most of them support health in ways that strengthen immunity. (Note: Another category of HPDI supplements is Specific Condition Formulas designed to address a specific problem or issue.)

While there are various immune-building formulas in the HPDI system, we focus on a select few in this article.

Medicinal mushroom are proven immune boosters. When various species are combined in a single formula, the product provides the benefits of each type of mushroom. HPDI offers several medicinal mushroom formulas, including Immune-Assist™.

Immune-Assist™ contains a combination of more than 200 different polysaccharides, derived from the enzymatic breakdown of complex organic plant material from six different species of medicinal mushrooms. These include Agaricus blazeiCordyceps sinensis hybrid, Lentinula edodes (shiitake), Grifola frondosa (maitake), Ganoderma lucidum (Reishi), and Coriolus versicolor. Immune-Assist™ contains 500 mg per vegetarian capsule and is made in America using only USDA-certified organic materials.

Immune-Assist™ is similar to other mushroom-based polysaccharides in that it is formulated through an enzymatically activated process whereby complex cross-linked polysaccharides from vegetable sources are converted to biologically active immunomodulators composed of simpler sugars (such as arabinose and xylose). However, Immune-Assist™ offers significant advantages.

medicinal-mushrooms viruses

Immune-Assist includes Maitake, Cordyceps, Agaricus, Lenticula edodes, Coriolus versicolor, and Ganoderma lucidum.

While Immune-Assist™ contains simple polysaccharides, it also contains more complex polysaccharides, including cross-linked beta mannans and beta-glucans, and hetero-polysaccharides which combine both alpha-bound and beta-bound monosaccharides in the same molecule. These complex polysaccharide compounds are not found in earlier-generation, bran-based supplements like AHCC (Active Hexose Correlated Compound). This is the reason Immune-Assist™ shows such a greater range of immuno-modulation bioactivity than AHCC and other bran-based supplements.

Immune-Assist™ contains not only arabinoxylane, but also lentinan, grifolan (Dr. Nanba’s original Maitake D-Fraction), PSK and PSP, and active hemicellulose correlated compound (AHCC). There is about three times more arabinoxylane per dose of Immune-Assist™ than there is in MGN3, and four times more AHCC than in the ImmPower brand of AHCC.

About a year ago, Fred wrote an extensive blog article title “Olive Leaf Extract: Antimicrobial Health Builder” in which he described many benefits of olive leaf extract (including its antiviral effects), as well as some of my personal experience with this formula. Check out that article for an extensive discussion of the benefits of olive leaf extract.

Olive Leaf viruses

Olive leaf extract exhibits antimicrobial activity.

HPDI’s Olive Leaf Extract formula contains 500 mg of the highest-quality patented olive leaf extract in a vegetarian capsule. This unique patented olive leaf extract is not inactivated by a blood protein due to its precise molecular rotation.

Olive leaf extract has a long history of strengthing health when microorganisms may be present. In recent years, a drug company discovered that in vitro (test tube) an extract from olive leaf (calcium elenolate) was effective in helping to control a very broad range of organisms.

The problem with using it in the body was that once in the blood, a protein combined with it and caused it to be inactivated. An American company in 1995 found that if the active molecule in olive leaf extract was rotated around a specific axis by a precise amount, the blood protein no longer inactivated it.

Olive leaf extract products without this unique molecular rotation are minimally effective in the body because they are inactivated by a blood protein after a short period of time (approximately 15 minutes).

HPDI’s Olive Leaf Extract provides molecular rotation for maximal effectiveness.

Many people report higher energy levels when using olive leaf extract. It has been shown to be extremely safe and non-toxic (even in large doses). See Olive Leaf Extract by Dr. Morton Walker for further information on its effectiveness and full range of applications.

Every week it seems, new studies report more information on the importance of Vitamin D for health. Among its many benefits: immunity boosting effects. Vitamin D has been shown to reduce the incidence of seasonal flu, for example. (See Vitamin D Abstracts in the resources section below.)

But it does so much more. That’s why we include it as an HPDI Enhancement Formula and have designed our own product that includes vitamins A and K2 (as MK-7) known to improve utilization of vitamin D in the body.

Vitamin D3 Plus is an advanced Vitamin D formula providing high-dose Vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 is the natural form of Vitamin D produced in the body from sunlight and is the form best used for therapeutic purposes.

One softgel capsule of Vitamin D3 Plus provides 5,000 IU of Vitamin D3 derived from highly purified and molecularly distilled fish liver oils. In addition, the product contains 1,000 IU of Vitamin A also derived from highly purified and molecularly distilled fish liver oils and 10 mcg of Vitamin K2 from menaquinone-7.

Vitamin D3 Plus includes synergistic nutrients known to enhance absorption and use of Vitamin D3 in the body. These nutrients include Vitamin K2 (menaquinone-7) (10 mcg), which which works together with Vitamin D to help boost bone density, improve cardiovascular health, and boost immunity.

Vitamin D3 Plus also provides 1,000 IU of Vitamin A, a nutrient known to work powerfully with Vitamin D to help create optimal health. As dosages of Vitamin D increase, ideally your dosage of Vitamin A also will increase, and vice versa. The formula also includes natural Vitamin E as an antioxidant.

Vitamin D3 Plus includes vitamins A and K2 (as MK-7).

Vitamin D3 is a fat-soluble vitamin increasingly known as a nutrient essential for health and well-being. Recent studies show that almost all body systems benefit from adequate Vitamin D intake/production. Therefore, it is important that the body receive optimal amounts in order to build the best health.

In fact, recent studies indicate that 5,000 IU of Vitamin D3 is an ideal amount for daily intake. What is notable about this amount is that the body does not gain the full benefits from Vitamin D until it reaches this “threshold” level of 5,000 IU While the body stores Vitamin D, it must first be given an adequate supply.

Vitamin D deficiency currently is a worldwide epidemic with more than one billion people at risk for diseases associated with low Vitamin D status. Vitamin D is proven safe and effective for a wide range of health conditions (see above and below). There are various reasons for this epidemic, including a significant portion of the world’s population living in northerly latitudes (where sunlight is inadequate during many months of the year), sun avoidance, time spent indoors, etc.

Vitamin D3 Plus provides only the Vitamin D3 form of Vitamin D. We avoid the use of Vitamin D2. Vitamin D2 has greater potential for toxicity, poorer absorption, and reduced effectiveness.

Nascent Iodine is the ideal form of iodine, rapidly absorbed and used by the body when taken as a nutritional supplement. Iodine is associated with a wide range of benefits, not limited to supporting thyroid function and regulating metabolism, boosting energy levels (when iodine is deficient), supporting and maintaining detoxification systems and processes, supporting immune system function, fighting infections (natural antiseptic), and many other healthy benefits. Because of its antiseptic properties, it also can be used effectively to purify water for drinking. One drop provides 400 micrograms of Nascent Iodine in a base of certified Biodynamic® grape alcohol.

Biochemically, Nascent Iodine  is consumable iodine in an atomic form rather than a molecular form. It is highly bioavailable as a pure atomic iodine supplement in an energized state. This “charged” state is held by the atom until diluted in water and consumed, whence it gradually loses energy over a 2–3 hour time span. During this time, Nascent Iodine is recognized by the body as the same iodine that is used by the thyroid and is absorbed effortlessly by the body. As noted, this particular form of iodine is unique and well known to offer beneficial effects unlike any other form of iodine.

nascent iodine formula viruses

Nascent Iodine supports immunity, thyroid health, and provides many other benefits.

Partly due to the fact that iodine supports (and is required for) thyroid function, the uptake of adequate amounts of iodine helps the body produce substantial levels of energy for metabolic processes. It is notable that twenty-five percent of the iodide ions found in the human body are found in the thyroid gland.

It is estimated that more than 90% of Americans suffer from a deficiency of iodine. There are many causes for widespread deficiency among the population. Some significant factors include diets lacking in ocean fish or sea vegetables (e.g., seaweeds), high intake of bromine (which is added to commercial breads and baked goods), and vegetarian or vegan diets (see more below), all of which may contribute to lower than optimal levels of iodine.

Moreover, it is known that toxic halides, including chlorine, fluorine (e.g., fluoride in toothpaste), and bromine (e.g., in breads) compete for uptake with iodine in the body, thereby contributing to iodine deficiency.

Iodine deficiency can lead to the development of many adverse health conditions (and a wide variety of symptoms) because the entire body (i.e., all organ systems) depends upon iodine for the critical roles it plays energy production, healthy metabolism, and overall support of health.

The importance of iodine to the biological function of the body traditionally focused on the role of iodine in the nourishment of the thyroid gland, particularly for the production of T3 and T4 hormones, and the regulation of metabolism.

However, as the understanding of this nutrient progresses, we have come to understand that the roles of iodine in the body far surpass those roles it has been believed to fulfill. Iodine is not only necessary for overall health, but also is a crucial component of detoxification processes critical for sustaining life and health.

Colloidal silver is a proven antimicrobial. It is highly effective against a broad range of viruses, bacteria, and fungi. It can help you combat these microbes.

HPDI offers a Silver Biotics® product made using a patented method to produce nano-silver particles suspended in a medium of highly purified water. The Silver Biotics® particles have been defined as a metallic nano-silver particle with a thin coating of polyvalent silver oxide.

silver-biotics polyvalent silver viruses

Polyvalent silver supports and maintains health naturally.

The patented production method supercharges the silver particles using 10,000 volts AC, whereas other colloidal silver solutions are typically only charged with 100 volts DC. This supercharging results in 2 electrons being removed from the outer shell of the silver atom giving it a +2 ionic charge compared to a +1 ionic charge for other colloidal silvers.

Because the ionic charge is one of the primary mechanisms by which silver particles work, the Silver Biotics® particles are significantly more effective than conventionally produced colloidal silver.

The patented production method used in creating Silver Biotics® polyvalent silver produces a unique electron configuration that gives the silver particles the catalytic ability to recharge and regenerate themselves over and over again. This gives each silver particle in the Silver Biotics® solution the ability to be used multiple times as opposed to the one time use of the particles produced by most other colloidal silvers.

Research also shows that conventionally produced colloidal silvers have a bioavailability of 15–65%, whereas the Silver Biotics® polyvalent silver has a bioavailability of over 99%. The ability of the Silver Biotics® polyvalent silver particles to be used multiple times along with the high bioavailability means that the Silver Biotics® is significantly more effective than other colloidal silver products even at the lower concentration of 10 ppm.

The silver particle size range in Silver Biotics® is between 0.005 and 0.015 microns. The particles are suspended in a solution of double distilled water. Our manufacturer has chosen a safe FDA approved plastic container for the Silver Biotics®. Research studies have shown that glass containers cause the polyvalent silver particles to plate out or precipitate from solution and reduce the product’s effectiveness by about 50%.

Tests performed at multiple research laboratories have shown that Silver Biotics® is highly effective against a broad range of bacteria, fungi (including Candida albicans), and viruses. Because Silver Biotics® does not target specific mechanisms, receptor sites, or metabolic processes, it is unlikely that mutations of the microbes will produce resistant strains (as antibiotics often do)!

In addition to its antimicrobial properties, Silver Biotics® has been shown to be a potent anti-inflammatory agent. Furthermore, there is powerful evidence that Silver Biotics® improves the state of the body’s immune system.

Silver Biotics® can be applied topically or taken internally. Also, it can be used as a topical disinfectant. Studies have demonstrated that it is highly non-toxic, even at high levels of ingestion (5g/kg of body weight). Furthermore, research studies by major research groups have shown that Silver Biotics® solutions are not cyto-toxic and do not kill friendly probiotic bacteria.

Magnesium is one of the most important minerals for health. It offers so many benefits that it would be difficult describe them briefly. However, suffice it to say that magnesium supports immunity, energy (ATP) production, vascular health, and total body wellness. Yet, nearly everyone (greater than 90% of Americans) is deficient.

HPDI offers several types of magnesium supplements. We offer a full range of Ancient Minerals topical magnesium chloride products, including magnesium oil, as well as flakes and gel. We also offer Myo-Mag, a unique combination of magnesium, malic acid, and synergistic nutrients.

Topically applied magnesium chloride formulas are among the most effective at rapidly elevating magnesium levels in the body. Magnesium provides significant health benefits to the body, including immune-boosting effects.

Magnesium dead sea viruses

Magnesium-rich water provides the body with rapidly assimilable magnesium.

Magnesium is necessary for the production of energy (ATP or Adenosine Triphosphate) in the body. When the body receives adequate amounts of magnesium, it can produce the levels of energy required to sustain the body and enable it to thrive. It is precisely because energy (as ATP) is required for the health of human organism that the critical role magnesium plays in energy production is gaining increased recognition by individuals interested in nutrition and natural health. All organ systems depend on energy. A mineral nutrient (i.e., magnesium) that can increase cellular energy thereby has the capacity to improve the health of the entire human body (i.e., all organ systems) via providing the energy for sustaining them all.

Magnesium is critical for cell metabolism. It helps to transport other minerals across cell membranes and affects cell mechanisms controlling muscle and nerve cell activity.

Magnesium specifically is important for the metabolism of many biologically active nutrients and substances, including calcium, potassium, phosphorus, zinc, copper, sodium, lead, cadmium, hydrochloric acid (HCl), acetylcholine, and nitric oxide (NO). It is required for more than 325 magnesium-dependent enzymes, cellular homeostasis, and activation of the B vitamin thiamin. It mediates the functions of the nervous and endocrine systems, supports proper muscle and nerve function, stabilizes heart rhythm, helps to regulate blood sugar levels, and supports normal blood pressure. As noted, magnesium is important in energy metabolism and the synthesis of proteins. The majority of magnesium within the nucleus of cells is closely connected with nucleic acids and mononucleotides. In fact, magnesium helps to maintain the structural integrity of DNA.

Unlike any other form of magnesium, magnesium chloride is a known infection fighter. As early as 1915, the French surgeon, professor of clinical surgery, and French Academy of Sciences member Dr. Pierre Delbet (1861–1957) used magnesium chloride solution to cleanse wounds in soldiers injured during the First World War. He had searched for an antiseptic that could disinfect wounds, but would not damage tissue (and thereby encourage mortification) as did other antiseptics then available. He reported that magnesium chloride was superior to traditional antiseptics not only in its effectiveness in treating wounds, but also because it did not harm body tissues.

Dr. Delbet discovered that magnesium chloride solution increased leucocyte activity and phagocytosis (i.e., the destruction of pathogenic microbes) when applied externally (i.e., used transdermally). He performed numerousin vitro and in vivo studies using magnesium chloride solution. These experiments led to his discovery that magnesium chloride was a potent immune stimulant whether applied externally (i.e., transdermal application), injected intravenously, or taken by mouth (i.e., consumed orally). He termed this immunity boosting effect “cytophilaxis” (a cytophylactic is a substance that protects cells and encourages their healthy growth). In this regard, he observed increased phagocytosis (the engulfing of pathogens by white blood cells) by up to 300 percent. That is, white blood cells were three times more effective at destroying microbes than before administration of magnesium chloride.

The pioneering efforts of Dr. Delbet were followed in the 1940s by fellow French physician Dr. A. Neveu. Dr. Neveu confirmed the immuno-stimulant effects of magnesium chloride, and he successfully tested magnesium therapy for wide range of conditions. These conditions included colds and flu, throat infections of the tonsils and pharnyx, lung and respiratory conditions, gastrointestinal inflammation (stomach flu), skin infections, septic wounds, and many common childhood conditions. More recently, other physicians such as Dr. Raul Vergini in Italy have confirmed the results reported earlier by Dr. Delbet and Dr. Neveu. Dr. Vergini reports excellent results using small quantities of orally administered magnesium chloride solution (2.5 percent magnesium chloride) both for proven applications developed by Dr. Delbert and Dr. Neveu, and for a broad range of other health conditions.

Magnesium oil provides an ideal means to increase magnesium levels in the body.

Additional benefits of magnesium oil include greater energy, more relaxed muscles (and stronger connective tissues), better sleep, improved mental function, headaches reduced (or eliminated), arterial health, better reproductive function, and better hormonal balance for men and women (and reduced PMS). In addition, magnesium maintains the flexibility of cell membranes for improved intercellular communication, greater uptake of bioactive substances (e.g., micronutrients, neurotransmitters, and hormones), and detoxification of toxins and metabolic waste products. Magnesium oil also acts as an effective full body tonic. Dr. Sircus asserts that transdermal magnesium therapy is among the very best ways to improve human health.

Vitamin C is a Foundational Supplement in the HPDI supplement system. That is, we consider it more fundamental than an Enhancement Formula, and so ideally everyone takes Vitamin C daily as part of a set of foundational supplements. I’m discussing it here because it plays a significant roles as immune-booster, and because the body may benefit from additional amounts of Vitamin C as a means of supporting health when fighting viral infection.

If you’re not already taking Vitamin C as part of your daily basic (i.e., foundational) supplements, then be sure either to add it to your supplement regimen or at least increase your intake during times you’re likely to be exposed to viruses.

Never forget the power of Vitamin C to benefit health, including support for strong immunity. Nobel prizewinner Dr. Linus Pauling documented the manifold benefits of this essential nutrient. If you read his research (in his books like How to Live Longer and Feel Better), you will see there is good reason why Vitamin C is classified a “vitamin” because without it we cannot survive.

Vitamin C rich foods include citrus fruits, peppers, and certain berries.

Dr. Pauling extolled the efficacy of Vitamin C in his many books, including How to Live Longer and Feel Better. We highly recommend this highly accessible work (even it that’s the only one you read) as he wrote it for a general audience. Or peruse his landmark Vitamin C and the Common Cold for additional perspective.

We include Vitamin C in our HPDI Foundational Supplement system precisely because of its critical role for basic health, healing, and wellness. HPDI offers a range of Vitamin C products.

These formulas include our premier PRO-C™ super antioxidant formula and Ultimate Protector Nrf2 antioxidant formula. We also offer Buffered C tablets and powder, as well as ascorbic acid capsules.

Ultimate Protector Nrf2 activator formula provides vitamin C, antioxidants, and Nrf2 activators.

The HPDI Rejuvenation Program includes various other means for supporting the body, including the immune system, against viruses and for good health generally.

As noted, one of the Supporting Protocols is the Garlic Program. Yet, other subprograms discussed include hydrotherapy and saunas, massage, acupuncture, and yoga.

We include these because building strong immunity almost always involves more than just diet, nutritional supplements, and a positive outlook. Incorporating various forms of exercise, relaxation, mindfulness and meditation, and traditional healing arts are proven means to support good health. And help to support immunity in ways that can help fight the viruses and other microbes that take advantage of weak immunity and undermine our health.

There are many things individuals can do to support powerful immunity that can help protect the body against viruses. In fact, there are many additional nutrients we haven’t discussed here. Suffice it to say that there are many natural nutrients, herbs, and other substances that can effectively support immunity and wellness in the face of exposure to viruses.

Olive Leaf Extract: Antimicrobial Health Builder

Fred Liers PhD olive leaf extractFew things in life are 100% guaranteed. This holds true for nutritional supplements, too. Yet, while olive leaf extract isn’t a panacea, it’s something everyone should consider taking when seeking to optimize health or effectively combat a virulent infection. Because when it comes to antimicrobial action, nothing beats taking the right olive leaf extract.

A true story. While writing this article, I unfortunately was exposed to several individuals who were not feeling well, and who were in fact fighting either colds or the flu. Shortly thereafter, I started taking six capsules of Olive Leaf Extract daily. Perhaps I should have started sooner. I suffered just one uncomfortable day and part of a night. I felt 90% better the very next day, and I pulled out of it from there. I believe I have olive leaf extract to thank for my fast recovery.

olive leaf extract

We live in a world filled with fascinating and dangerous pathogenic microbes. These include antibiotic-resistant bacteria, viruses (including retroviruses), yeasts and opportunistic fungi, as well as parasites (i.e., protozoa and helminthic worms). Biological science tells us more about these primitive, infectious agents every day.

Recent research reveals that when you count all the genetic material in, on, and around a human being,  only about 10% of is actually human DNA. That is, the “microbiome” that surrounds us and includes our DNA is 90% made-up of microbes!

This discovery of the true nature of the human microbiome fundamentally changes how we must think of ourselves as humans. It has major implications for 1) how we interact with, and share, genetic information with the microbes in our microbiome, 2) how microbes communicate among themselves to build resistance to pharmaceuticals and develop into “superbugs,” and 3) how we can support the health of our microbiome by natural means that create balance and maintain healthy populations of “beneficial” bacteria.

A well established fact is the development of drug resistance in microbes. Many of the most potent antibiotics no longer work effectively to protect us. Moreover, pharmaceutical drugs typically kill microbes indiscriminately, the beneficial ones and the harmful ones alike.

This causes problems for health because unless the body is rapidly repopulated with beneficial microbes, the human microbiome becomes imbalanced in favor of harmful microbes that lead to adverse health conditions. The fact is that we live in a “post-antibiotic” era.

Fortunately, there are potent natural antimicrobials, immune modulators, and amazing health-building supplements. These include foods like garlic, food-based complexes (e.g., medicinal mushrooms), high potency plant-based antioxidant formulas (including Nrf2 activator formulas like Ultimate Protector™), and herbal extracts like olive leaf extract. Many of these herbs and therapeutic substances work both by direct antimicrobial activity and support our immune system to help it combat foreign pathogens.

Olive leaf extract is unique and different. In fact, olive leaf extract is of particular interest not only because its antimicrobial activity is just as potent (or more so) than other natural antimicrobials, but also because it offers significant benefits that are unique to itself.

• Olive leaf extract offers the benefits of being a broad-specrum antimicrobial while at the same time exhibiting no harmful effects on beneficial microbes. This is a key benefit because it means that it will not induce the types of side effects associated with antibiotics, and especially will not lead to secondary infections related to a preponderance of harmful bacteria.

• A related benefit is that while certain types of bacteria are resistant to most (or all) classes of antibiotics, these same bacteria remain vulnerable to olive leaf extract. This makes olive leaf extract one of the most important natural substances for battling some of the most dangerous infectious agents.

• Another major benefit is that olive leaf extract can directly stimulate phagocytosis, the process whereby white blood cells engulf and consume harmful bacteria in the body. The immune system already supports phagocytosis, but olive leaf extract can increase the activity of phagocytes, such as macrophages.

• Olive leaf extract offers many additional, specific benefits for health. I will discuss more of them below.

olive tree leaf

An important fact is that there is one type of olive leaf extract that is most effective against pathogens. It is a form of olive leaf extract that relies upon a patented process to concentrate active ingredients that cannot be deactivated by proteins in the human bloodstream. This form is the one contained in HPDI’s Olive Leaf Extract formula.

For centuries, the active ingredients in olive leaves were unknown. During the 19th century, a phenolic compound known as oleuropein was isolated from olive leaves. It was later determined that this bitter glucoside is present throughout the olive tree, i.e., it its leaves, fruits (olives), bark, and roots.

Botanists consider oleuropein to be the substance that protects the living tree from pests and disease. It helps the olive tree survive for centuries and even for millennia (see more below).

In the late 1960s, the Upjohn company isolated the primary antimicrobial ingredient present in oleuropein. This ingredient was the calcium salt elenolic acid, known chemically as calcium elenolate. Calcium elenolate was highly effective against nearly every bacterium, virus, yeast, fungus, and protozoan against which it was tested.

The effectiveness of calcium elenolate, however, remained confined to the test tube (in vitro) because it was determined the proteins in the blood stream bound to it. This rendered calcium elenolate ineffective in the body (i.e., in vivo) after just a few minutes.

Upjohn did much beneficial research, but abandoned its attempts to find a patentable form of olive leaf extract because the company could not surmount the problem of the active ingredient being bound by serum proteins in blood.

In 1994, a company (East Park Research, Inc.) discovered a method for processing olive leaves that would concentrate an active form of the extract that would not be inactivated by proteins in the bloodstream.

East Park built upon the research done by Upjohn to develop a calcium elenolate product for practical use. That is, the company created an olive leaf extract formula that preserves all the antimicrobial effectiveness of pure calcium elenolate in vitro without any reduced effectiveness in the human body (in vivo). This discovery represents an important breakthrough that has given us access to using olive leaf extract to support human health.

HPDI offers the form of olive leaf extract developed by East Park research. While many companies have developed and sell olive leaf extract formulas, most of these are based on oleuropein or other components in olive leaf.

Standard olive leaf extracts may exert some effectiveness as antimicrobials, but their potency is limited by the fact that serum proteins inactivate the primary active ingredient (calcium elenolate). This is same problem encountered by Upjohn, and solved by East Park Research, Inc. That is why the best form to take is olive leaf extract created using the process patented by East Park.

Here is a partial list of infectious diseases against which Olive Leaf Extract is known to be effective:

AIDS, Amoebiasis, Bladder infections (UTIs), Botulism, Campylobacter, Chicken Pox (Varicella), Cholera, Colds, Cold sores, Conjunctivitis, Crytosporidiosis, Cytomegalovirus (CMV), Ear infections (Otitis media), Ebola, E. Coli, Encephalitis, Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Flu (influenza), Food-borne illnesses, Gastric ulcers (H. pylori), Giardia, Hepatitis, Herpes zoster (shingles), Legionnaire’s Disease, Lockjaw (Tetanus), Lyme Disease, Malaria, Measles (Rubeola), Meningitis, Mononucleosis (Mono), Mumps, Pink Eye (Conjunctivitis), Pinworm, Plague, Pneumonia, Polio (Poliomyelitis), Rabies, Rheumatic Fever, Ringworm, Retrovirus, Roundworm, Salmonella (Salmonellosis), Scarlet Fever, Shigella (Shigellosis), Smallpox, Strep throat, Tuberculosis (TB), Toxoplasmosis, Typhoid Fever, Whooping Cough (Pertussis), Yeast syndrome (Candidiasis), and Yellow Fever.

Olive leaf extract is one of nature’s most powerful antimicrobials. Normally, the task of keeping microbes at bay in the body falls to the immune system. However, there are times when the immune system struggles against bacteria, viruses, or fungi. In fact, increasingly, pharmaceutical antibiotics are becoming ineffective as microbes develop resistance to most classes of these formerly powerful drugs, which also exert harmful side effects on humans.

Olive leaf extract is not a drug or a “miracle” cure, but rather a natural substance that supports immune system function in ways that surpasses the immune-boosting capabilities of most other natural substances.

Olive leaf extract acts in the following ways to support and maintain health:

1) Olive leaf extract interferes with microbes’ amino acid processes. That is, calcium elenolate acts to prevent the reproductive processes of many microbes, and this helps to reduce their total number, as well as interferes with their infection processes. Also, there is evidence that olive leaf extract is able to enter infected cells within the body and stop the replication of viruses in cells. [1]

2) Olive leaf extract prevents viruses from shedding. Viruses replicate by shedding. However, calcium elenolate (R-form) attaches to cell membranes where it stops viruses from multiplying and spreading themselves into surrounding cells and tissues. Calcium elenolate also neutralizes the production of reverse transcriptase and protease in retroviruses. Without these enzymes, retroviruses are unable to adversely affect the RNA of a normal cell.

3) Olive leaf extract can directly stimulate phagocytosis. Phagocytosis is an immune system response whereby cells engulf and “swallow” microorganisms, including microbes and other pathogens.

Thus, the primary mode of action of olive leaf extract in the body is antimicrobial. Olive leaf extract fights harmful microbes and boosts the immune system. This means it supports the immune system to help keep it strong, which can help create and maintain health.

As a natural antimicrobial, olive leaf extract offers benefits over pharmaceutical antimicrobials because it does not kill beneficial bacteria, which can lead to an overpopulation of harmful bacteria. Nor does it exert any harmful side effects.

Olive leaf extract offers many other benefits beyond its antimicrobial action. Some of these benefits may surprise you. Reported benefits include:

• Relief from arthritis and arthritic inflammation

• Improved circulation in cardiovascular or peripheral vascular flow

• Antioxidant activity

• Normalization of arrhythmias (heart beat irregularities)

• Lessening of tooth pain

• Reduction of pain from hemorrhoids

It may at first seem difficult to believe that a single plant extract can do so much for our health. But it most certainly can and does! There is one potential adverse effect that must be mentioned, but which really cannot be compared to the side effects of pharmaceuticals. That is, the surprisingly potency of olive extract against harmful pathogens can lead to certain “die-off” reactions.

Die-off reactions (also known as Herxheimer reactions) are caused when large numbers of microbes die quickly, and either release or become toxins in the body that must be removed. Typically, the body takes some time to clear dead microbes, but in itself a die-off reaction is not harmful. It is actually a sign that olive leaf extract is doing its job of destroying harmful microbes and effectively helping the immune system to combat infection.

Olive leaf extract has seen its popularity grow, and with good reason. Antibiotics increasingly are ineffective as many years of over-prescribing and overuse has led to the development of antibiotic resistant bacteria. The point has been reached where “superbugs” appear regularly and are exhausting the capacities of antibiotics to function effectively.

Bacteria reproduce quickly. Antibiotics may stop an infection, destroying the vast majority of the responsible pathogens. However, when there are even just a few surviving bacteria that develop resistance through genetic mutation or by having picked up genetic material from another antibiotic-resistant organism,  these “superbugs” can quickly become a major problem. As you can see, the use of antibiotics actually helps create “superbugs” resistant to them. So, the overuse of antibiotics in counterproductive to health.

microbe olive leaf extract

As noted, bacterial immunity to antibiotics is not always related to chance mutation. Superbug bacteria cooperate with one another by exchanging self-copying pieces of DNA known as plasmids, which include genes that are not part of a the main chromosome. There also exist so-called “jumping genes,” which are bits of DNA that can move from one microbe to another. In fact, it is well known that bacteria hardly live in isolation, but are part of a vast world of microbes that communicate and interact with each other.

antibiotic resistance olive leaf extract
In her 2009 TED talk, “How Bacteria Talk,” Princeton molecular biologist Bonne Bassler speaks about her discovery of the languages of microbes, and how most types of microbes not only communicate among themselves, but also have a common language that allows them to communicate (and share genetic material) with other microbial species. One of the most interesting facts about the human microbiome is that 90% of the genetic material in and on a human being is from microbes. That is, the human body has about one trillion cells, but there are at least 10 trillion bacteria cells in or on the typical human body at any given time. So there are ten times more bacterial cells than human cells on a human being.

Something Bassler talks about is how microbes communicate and can share bits of DNA. This means they can easily share genetic materials, including those that provide resistance to antibiotics. Also of importance is the fact that when harmful bacteria proliferate due to lower populations of beneficial bacteria, the harmful bacteria “know” when they reach a critical mass necessary to enable a successful attack against their host organism. At this point, harmful bacteria that formerly may have been peacefully coexisting in balance with beneficial bacteria may take advantage of the situation to attack en masse.

Bassler’s TED talk helps explain how superbugs evolve and develop resistance so quickly, and how they know when their number are sufficient to launch a successful attack. Given what science now tells us about the nature of microbes and superbugs, it appears that olive leaf extract can play a significant role for protecting human health.

Olive leaf extract derives from the leaves of the olive tree. The olive tree (Olea europeana L.)  is a species in the ancient Oleaceae botanical family. This family also includes ash, jasmine, and lilac. Olive trees have been cultivated for thousands of years, especially in the Near East and the Mediterranean basin, including areas in Syria, Palestine, and Crete.

Fossil evidence found in Greece, Macedonia, and elsewhere indicates that the genus is native to the Mediterranean and Western Asia. Some evidence exists that it originated in tropical northern Africa and later was introduced  to the Mediterranean via Egypt. References to olive trees and olives are plentiful in ancient Greek and Roman literature, and they figure prominently in the Bible, Hebrew Bible, and Quran.

Olive trees can live for thousands of years. Some currently living trees are more than 2,000 years old. A major reason that olive trees live so long are the natural chemicals in its leaves, bark, and fruit that protect them from parasites, insects, and fungi. While they are not 100% percent immune from attacks, they naturally repel invaders, and thereby protect themselves effectively enough to avoid catastrophic infections and infestations.

Cultivation of olive trees is estimated to have begun more than 7,000 years ago. Olives were propagated commercially in Crete as early as 3,000 BCE. Today, olives are grown on six continents and are one of the most extensively grown fruit crops in the world taking a total land area of almost 10 million hectares. 90% of cultivated olives are used for making olive oil. The other 10% become table olives.

Production is dominated by Mediterranean countries. As of 2011, Spain grows by far the most olives trees (and provides about 40% of the world’s olive oil) followed by Italy and Greece. Other important producers are Turkey, Morocco, Syria, Algeria, Tunisia, Egypt, Portugal, Argentina, Jordan, Australia, Lebanon, Israel, the United States, Chile, Croatia, and France.

In the New World, cultivation of olive trees began in Peru and Chile in the mid-1500s. Olives trees were established in San Diego, California in the 1700s by Spanish missionaries. Olive trees thrive along the Pacific coast of the Americas wherever a typically Mediterranean climate prevails. Thus, California olives are known and prized throughout the olive-consuming world.

Olives in their natural state are highly bitter. In order to make them palatable, olives traditionally are fermented, cured using water or brine, or packed in salt. These processes leach out and breakdown the bitter glycoside known as oleuropein, as well as various phenolic compounds. Removing these natural substances is important for creating delicious olives. However, these are the very substances that protect the olive tree and its fruits from invasion by insects, microbes, and other pathogens. These substances also provide the antimicrobial and other therapeutic powers of the olive tree for human use.

During the Napoleonic era’s “Peninsular War” between Spain and France (1807–1814), Spanish doctors on the front lines developed a bitter drink made from the ground olive leaf. The bitter green drink was given to wounded soldiers suffering from high fevers. It was found that this drink could reduce a dangerously high fevers (104 degrees F and above) to far milder fevers of less than 101 degrees. This drink therefore significantly reduced recovery times for Spanish soldiers and allowed feverish soldiers to continue fighting. The French soon discovered the Spanish febrifuge and began using it for their soldiers.

After the war, Colonel Etiene Pallas, a French officer and medical doctor of the French Foreign Legion, who had served in Spain in 1811, began research into the therapeutic ingredients in the green olive leaf drink. He published his findings in a book about his experiences in the war (1827), an article in a medical journal (1828), and in his memoirs (1929) [2]. Dr. Pallas found that the leaves and young bark of the olive tree contain various therapeutic substances, foremost among them a bitter, yet colorless, non-odorous, and crystallizable substance he describes as “Vaqueline.” He ascribes most of the fever reducing characteristics of the olive leaf drink to this substance.

Following Dr. Pallas’s publication of information regarding the therapeutic powers of ground olive leaf, additional information was published in the medical literature into the 1850s describing teas and liquids made from olive leaf, particularly as a possible cure for malaria, which is caused by parasitic protozoans. Olive leaves were described as being boiled in water to make an olive leaf tea. In other instances, olive leaf tea was mixed with wine to make an olive leaf tincture (Tinctura Olea Foliorum).

Medical reports during the mid-1800s describe the improvement of malaria patients who drank olive leaf teas or consumed olive leaf tinctures. Other reports indicate that olive leaf teas were used in England for treating sick sailors and passengers returning from colonies in the tropics. Nevertheless, extracts of olive leaf were neither standardized for potency and effectiveness, nor were they used systematically for any diseases for which they could be useful, such as malaria.

Later in the 1800s, biochemists more carefully analyzed powdered olive leaf. It was determined that the active ingredient in olive leaf is a phenolic compound, which as given the name scientific name “Oleuropein.” Oleuropein is a bitter glucoside that is present in all parts of the olive plant, including its wood, roots, bark, fruit, and leaves, and which provides significant protection to the tree against insects and microbes.

Technically, the chemical formula for oleuropein (C25H32O13) classifies it as falling into the iridoid group of organic compounds, a group of secondary metabolites not directly involved in the growth, development, or reproduction of an organism, but often useful as medicines. While iridoids were first isolated in the 1830s, it was not until the 1960s that investigations were initiated to study the structure of the group.

In the 20th century, it was determined that the primary substance in olive leaf for therapeutic purposes is elenolic acid, which is one of oleuropein’s hydrolysis products. Elenolic acid is what destroys or inhibits harmful microbes (along with another hydrolysis product known as aglycone) and offers benefits that differ from oleuropein, and in fact, can surpass it’s therapeutic effects by a wide margin.

The calcium salt of elenolic acid is known as calcium elenolate. In the late 1960s, researchers at The Upjohn Company isolated calcium elenolate, which provides unparalleled antimicrobial activity in vitro (i.e., in a test tube), but which is quickly (i.e., within minutes) bound by proteins in the bloodstream of living animals. It is this binding that inactivates the active ingredients and prevents the calcium elenolate from exerting lasting therapeutic effects in humans.

Upjohn continued its research in an attempt to synthesize and patent an antibiotic drug based on the calcium elenolate. However, they found no solution that could stop blood proteins from binding to calcium elenolate. The company ultimately abandoned the project because their researchers could not find a way to maintain in vivo the extreme potency demonstrated by calcium elenolate in vitro. That is, they could not surmount the challenge preventing calcium elenolate from binding with serum proteins in the blood. Nevertheless, the researchers at Upjohn performed much important work with olive leaf extract, including safety testing, which I will talk about further below.

Upjohn’s research determined that there are two forms of calcium elenolate in olive leaf extract. These two forms are biochemically termed stereo isomers, which means these are molecules with a certain “handedness.” The two forms exist as mirror images of one another with one being “left” (L) handed and other being “right” (R) handed in terms of their rotation and how they fit into the molecules of life.

In fact, many organic compounds (including most amino acids) found in nature have stereo isomers. Yet, while nature may produce equal amounts of  both types (R and L) of isomers, nature uses only the left-handed amino acids in living proteins (DNA, RNA, etc.), for example. That is, the left handed forms are the only ones that interact with with molecules of life. This is the reason that L-form calcium elenolate can be deactivated in the body. The R-form, however, was discovered not to bind with blood proteins.

In addition, the handedness of a molecule can be determined by the way in which it reflects polarized light. L-forms (like L-arginine or L-carnitine molecules) reflect polarized light to the left. R-forms, such as R-calcium elenolate molecules, reflect the light to the right. Although Upjohn researchers determined that the right-reflecting, R-form of calcium elenolate (i.e., R-calcium elenolate) does not not bind to proteins in the bloodstream, they did not isolate a product that exhibited the pathogen-destroying capacities of R-calcium elenolate.

Research continued into the development of an olive leaf extract that exhibits all the potency of the extract in vitro, yet functions effectively in vivo for more than a few minutes. It was not until 1995 that scientists at East Park Research, Inc. discovered a process for extracting olive leaf extract that concentrates R-form molecules of calcium elenolate in a natural olive leaf extract product.

Due to the potency and effectiveness of the olive leaf extract product produced by East Park’s proprietary, patented extraction process, the therapeutic benefits of olive leaf extract are now available to consumers. In fact, largely due to the attention garnered by this powerful product, other companies have begun to create olive leaf extract formulas. Many of these other formulas provide high concentrations of oleuropein. While olive leaf extracts high in oleuropein exhibit some effectiveness, they do not offer the same benefits of calcium elenolate, much less its R-form.

It is therefore important when considering an olive leaf extract formula to use a formula proven to exhibit the highest effectiveness and potency. That formula is an olive leaf extract [link to hpdi product] that contains the R-form produced by the patented process developed by East Park Research, Inc. HPDI carries only this unique olive leaf extract formula.

Living in a post-antibiotic age means we can no longer rely on “miracle” drugs when dealing with harmful microbes and superbugs. Olive leaf extract provides one of the most potent, natural means for protecting ourselves from even the most antibiotic-resistant bacteria, for example.

Olive leaf extract also affords us protection not only from a wide range of microbes, but also offers significant health benefits beyond its antimicrobial powers. These varied benefits include increasing energy levels, fighting chronic fatigue, reducing blood pressure, normalizing irregular heart beats, and many other benefits.

It is rare that a single plant extract can do so much for our health. That’s why olive leaf extract should be on your short list of natural supplements and be kept available at all times for when you may need it.
